2.ITS SIZE:

Valencia is the capital of the Valencian Community and the third more populated city in Spain. Valencia offers every service and accommodation that other big cities like Madrid or Barcelona might have but with the advantage that Valencia is cheaper and since it’s smaller, you can walk or use the public transport to get anywhere. Valencia is an accessible city and it’s flat, which helps when it comes to riding a bike. The public transport such as the subway or the tram connects the centre of the city with its outskirts and the beach.

3. ITS CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT:

In Valencia we have a lot of cultural offerings: theatres, museums (Museum of Fine Arts, the IVAM, the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum in the City of Arts and Sciences, the Museum of Illustration and Modernity or the National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts, located in the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas), concert halls, cinemas, fairs (of the Nations, gastronomic, Andalusian, attractions).

The city of Valencia offers many music festivals throughout the year: Electroweeken with guest artists such as Marco Corda, Adam Beyer, Ben Sim; the Arts Festival that combines music, design, illustration, fashion and gastronomy; the Marenostrum in the area near the beach and the port of Valencia you can enjoy artists such as Nervo, Blinders, Coyu, Sven Väth; the Deleste that mixes unconventional international and national bands. Many festivals are held very close to Valencia, which you can go to both by train and by bus: the FIB (Benicàssim), considered one of the most important festivals in Europe.

 

The Rototom (Benicàssim), a festival that welcomes reggae lovers for 8 days and includes other cultural activities based on debates, films, documentaries, photographic exhibitions, meditation, the values that predominate tolerance, peace, respect for the environment, and non-violence. In 2010 it received recognition from UNESCO as an Emblematic Event of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. You can also go to Arenal Sound (Burriana), Low Festival (Benidorm), Ibera Festival (Benidorm), Iboga Summer (Cullera), Medusa Sunbeach (Cullera).

If you are a person who likes outdoor activities, you’ll enjoy walking around Valencia, as it has an exclusive lane for biking. You can also do activities such as sailing, diving or surfing on the beach. If you are a true runner you will enjoy the Turia River Park and the Cabecera Park.

4. ITS GASTRONOMY:

Valencia has a wide Mediterranean-based gastronomic offer, with lots of fruits, vegetables, fish, and fresh seafood. If you come to Valencia you have to try our star dish which is paella, a dry rice stew with chicken and rabbit, beans and garrofon all cooked in a paella. You can also try other rice dishes such as Arroz al Horno, arroz a banda (with fish and seafood), black rice (with squid ink), arròs amb fesols i naps (a soupy rice with beans and turnips) or fideua (which has noodles, fish and seafood).

The Valencian fruit is traditionally the orange, if you are more into sweets you have to try the chocolate with buñuelos, the horchata, a refreshing drink that is accompanied with fartons (long biscuits with sugar), the pumpkin, sweet potato and almond sweet known as arnadí, the Christmas turrón and the typical Easter mona or panquemado.

And, of course, one day you will have to go for tapas to try patatas bravas, grilled cuttlefish, tellinas, clochinas, anchovies in vinegar, cod croquettes and esgarraet, a very traditional dish cooked with pepper, roasted eggplant, cod and olive oil.

If you study in Valencia Valencia you will be able to enjoy several gastronomic events such as: Valencia Cuina Oberta which are gastronomic days in which lunch and dinner menus are offered in restaurants that are worth visiting. Each edition has new establishments and in 2015, 68 restaurants participated. You can also go to the Tapa Fair held in the port of Valencia and taste the various tapas that the restaurants make for only 1.50€. You can also go to the Gastronomic Days of Seafood Rice in which you can enjoy in the restaurants near the beach with a menu that will be based on seafood rice cuisine.

If you want to innovate and try out the gourmet cuisine, you have to visit: Ricard Camarena Restaurant (1 Michelin star), Riff Restaurant (1 Michelin star), La Sucursal Restaurant (1 Michelin star), El Poblet de Quique Dacosta Restaurant (1 Michelin star).

Furthermore, Valencia has hosted important events such as the 32nd and 33rd edition of the America’s Cup in 2007 and 2010, the World Athletics Championships in 2008, the European Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Global Champions Tour or the MotoGP World Championship (in Cheste) and since 2009 the Tennis Open has been held in the Ágora of the City of Arts and Sciences.

Valencia hides places that will make you travel to the past: el Mercado Central, el Mercado de Colón, La Lonja de la Seda, the Cathedral, El Miguelete, the Serranos or Quart Towers, and the XV century palaces like the Marqués de dos Aguas Palace, the Generalitat Palace and the Escrivà and Boïl Palace.
