Who should get a Visa to study in Spain?

Students who come from countries outside the European Union need to obtain a visa to study in Spain.

1. If the stay is SHORTER than 90 days (3 months), a SHORT-DURATION VISA (tourist Visa or Schengen Visa is required: a Visa that allows free movement within Spain and other EU countries. 1. If the stay is SHORTER than 90 days (3 months), a SHORT-DURATION VISA (turist visa orSchengen visais required: a visa that allows free movement within Spain and other EU countries. To obtain it, the interested person must apply for a visa at the Embassy of the country they wish to go to, located in their country of origin. This visa has a duration of 90 days.

2. If the stay is LONGER than 90 days (3 months), it is necessary to obtain a student visa. To obtain this type of visa, the interested person must fill out a national visa application form, and must also go to the embassy of the country to which they wish to travel and provide a photograph, a valid passport, proof of admission to the studies they wish to pursue in the country, and a medical certificate. This visa is valid for 180 days.

3. If the stay exceeds 180 days, the student must obtain a Foreigner Identity Card within the first month after the arrival in the country at the Immigration Office or at the Police Station.

Where do I have to go to apply for a student visa?

The student must process the application directly at the Spanish consulate, on the Embassy and Consulates section, or access directly from the link at the end of this page. The interested party will have to find an embassy, consulate or representative of Spain nearby and go in person to be able to provide all the documentation. In addition, the Spanish counsellor will call the applicant to conduct a personal interview.

What are the requirements and documents for the application?

The student must fill out the Visa application form. In addition, they must have an acceptance letter from a university or academic institution. This document certifies that they have been admitted as a student to an educational centre recognized by the Spanish authority to pursue studies of no less than 3 months of duration.

How can you obtain the acceptance letter?

To obtain this acceptance letter you have to contact an academic institution and explain which kind of course you want to take, after being accepted they will send you the letter certifying that you have enrolled in a course, and detailing your personal information, type of course, dates, duration, and payment.

In addition, you must provide personal information such as your academic experience, skills, and professional goals. This information is very relevant, since the authorities will evaluate your profile. Write a letter in which you explain the reasons why you want to come to study in Spain. You can also attach your resume.

You must present an updated photo as well as an updated and valid passport for the months that you will reside in Spain, a legalised criminal record certificate, a medical certificate, and medical insurance that covers your stay in Spain.

If you are under 18 years of age and your parents are not going to accompany you to Spain, you must have a written authorization by them to travel and take the course.

Finally, you must demonstrate that you have the necessary financial means to cover your stay in Spain (price of the course, accommodation, medical assistance, return to your country). You can attach documentation of the scholarship, financial aid, letter from your parents or guardian assuming full responsibility.

Once I arrive in Valencia, what do I do? When you arrive in Valencia, you have to go to the immigration office located on Calle Diputada Clara Campoamor esquina Motilla de Palancar, 23. There they will provide you with your student card. You will need to present the following documents: the certificate from the educational centre to which you have been admitted, all your valid personal documents, and if you are under age: the authorization of your parents.

How long does it take to respond to the request?

From the moment the student submits all the documentation, the processing of the application can take more than a month. However, the resolution period is a maximum of three months.

How can I go to collect the student Visa once it has been granted? Once they have sent you the notification of approval, you have two months to collect it. It is mandatory that you pick it up personally, another person cannot go in your place.

If I want to extend the time of my student visa to stay longer studying, what should I do?

You can request an extension to continue studying longer as long as the initial stay was longer than 6 months, you are enrolled in a longer Spanish course, you prove that you have passed the tests of the course taken in Spain, and that you continue to have financial means.

You must request the extension for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 1 year.
Remember that the extension request must be requested during the 60 days prior to the expiration date of the student card.
